Check Out Women's Community Dance Classes - Held Bi-Weekly at Garfield Community Center

Posted 10/20/2010 in Community.

Just down the street at Garfield Community Center there are Central District Women's Community Dance Classes going on every Monday and Wednesday evening 7-8pm!

Classes are held in the multi-purpose room at Garfield Community Center (2323 E Cherry St) and are for all women, all skill levels of dance! The style is a mix of ballet, jazz, modern and hip-hop, and aims to bring women together in a friendly environment that builds community, supports healthy living, and is really fun!

These classes support Rest, an organization works with women and girls in the Seattle area that are involved in sex trafficking - your $10 suggested donation will go to help other women in our area who desperately need it!

So if you've been looking for a new way to mix up your workout, or an opportunity to meet other women in the neighborhood, or even just a chance to be part of something positive for women in our city, come check out a class! All classes are drop-in and you don't need any special wardrobe or shoes to participate. Just come ready to move and have fun!

October Artist at Cortona: Blythe Bostock

Posted 10/11/2010 in Art.

This month at Cortona we have a series of paintings from artist Blythe Bostock. Here's a bit from Blythe's artist statement:

I started painting three years ago. I've always been creative at decorating homes; my own and my friends. I never imagined I'd branch out and begin painting on large canvases with oil paints.

I now have a studio in my basement. I never know what I'm going to paint. But, I start. And it evolves. I find that any stress or tiredness I might feel at the time vanishes. Sometimes, hours go by and I'm still painting. My inspiration comes from music, nature, my own garden, trips to Mexico, my feelings at the time, and my love for my family, animals and friends. For me, painting has been a rejuvenation for my soul. It lifts my spirit. I'm doing what I love and I'm loving what I'm doing. Like my father, I have never had an art lesson except in highschool. My inspiration comes from within. I don't want that to change.

We love having large swaths of color on canvas all around our space at Cortona! Check out the art next time you're here!
