Duke Ellington's Sacred Music at Town Hall Tonight, Dec. 26th!

Posted 12/26/2010 in Community and Events.

If you're looking for something to do tonight, there is a great event happening at town hall: the Annual Concert of Sacred Music by Duke Ellington, presented by Earshot Jazz. It starts at 7:30pm.

Ellington's wonderful "Sacred Music" is both serious and swinging. It is a reverent and hip body of jazz composition, written late in his career, for jazz big band, vocal and instrumental soloists, gospel choir, and tap dancers.

For the past 21 years Earshot Jazz has presented an annual concert of Ellington's Sacred Music. The concert features the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, co-directed by Michael Brockman and Clarence Acox, guest vocalists Everett Greene, Nichol Eskridge, and the NW Chamber Chorus, and special guest tap-dancer Alex Dugdale.

Tickets run between $15-34 and can be purchased beforehand at Brown Paper Tickets.

Neighborhood Business Card Highlight: Seattle JazzED

Posted 12/16/2010 in Community.

This week we are highlighting a business card from Mike Halperin, a founding trustee of Seattle JazzED, a non-profit organization that trains Seattle-area youth in high level jazz music training and performance. One of the important aspects of JazzED's mission is that they offer opportunities to youth regardless of their previous access to musical resources or ability to pay tuition. They reach out into under-served areas in the community and give opportunities to learn self-confidence and discipline through the rich heritage of jazz music. Auditions are held every year in September for students to join, and the program is 25 weeks long.

If you scroll down on their Listen & Learn page, you can watch a couple videos of previous performances from Seattle JazzED students. Check out the website or contact Mike (mike@mhelperin.com) for more info!
